Definition and causes

Retinal detachment is a rare disease. Around 500 people get the disease each year here in Denmark. Retina lies on the inside of the eye across the rear half. It is the light frames when it penetrates pupil, and the retinal cells that tells the brain what you see. Damage to the retina will therefore result in impaired or lost vision.

As the name says, retinal detachment is a condition where the retina separates from inside the eye, the "fall off". This leads to retinal visual cells can not signal to the brain, and vision will disappear. The disease is very serious. There are several reasons why retinal detachment occurs.

The commonest reason is that there will be a requirement in the retina. Your eye is filled out by a large jellies-like mass, called glass body. The older you get, the more unclear is the glass body. In some glass will decrease the body perfectly. Since the glass body is linked to the retina, will the glass drag the body a bit of the retina with it when it collapses and thereby create a rule. Through regulation being fluid penetrate behind the retina and thus loosen it from inside the eye. Risk factors for this kind of nethi

Symptoms of retinal detachment

  • "Flies"blindfolded. All people have "flies" as a result of ambiguities in small glass body. If a sudden, more flies (or "spider's web" or "flickering curtains") may be an indication that the glass body has fallen together.

  • Smalllightningor flashes may be a sign of a regulation in the retina.

  • A shadow, Who as a blind drawn down or up in front of the eye, are signs of acute retinal detachment.

Precautions and treatment of retinal detachment

If you detect signs of retinal detachment, you should consult a doctor right away. The sight can usually be saved if treated in time, but it is lost, you can not do anything.

The disease is found by looking into the retina of a special lamp (a oftalmoskop).

Until treatment can be done, you lie down in bed and avoid reading or similar load of the eye. There are several types of treatment:

  • A rubber band placed around the eye. This presses the glass body against the retina, which they kept in place.

  • In an operation removed the collapsed vitreous, and instead fill the eye up with gas or silicone. This keeps the retina in place.

  • Retinal detachment can be prevented if a regulation in the retina was discovered, and it deals with the laser.
