Age-related macular degeneration orAMDcalled in English "calcification on the retina." This description is not entirely correct, since there is no real soft, but a gradual deterioration of the retina central part. AMD is very common in Denmark, over 40,000 Danes suffering from the disease. The disease seen in the elderly, and the risk of AMD increases sharply with age. 10% of people over 60 years, AMD, and the figure rises sharply in the years thereafter. Every year 1,000 Danes blind due to AMD.

Eye rear half is made up of the retina, retina. The retina is sitting viewing the cells, which capture light and send impulses to the brain. This means that you can see. Back of the retina are covered with a thin membrane called årehinden orchoroidea. Årehinden is, as its name suggests, full of veins and ensure that supply a large portion of the retina of oxygen. The center of the retina, the light from the point, focusing on frameworks, there are few visual cells. This stain is calledmaculaluteaor the yellow stain.

A division of AMD and causes of AMD

There are two types of AMD, dry AMD (80% of cases) and wet AMD (20% of cases). In dry AMD, there is a reduction of oxygen supply to the yellow stain, probably due to an accumulation of waste material and destruction and narrowing of blood vessels from årehinden. This means that visual cells die, and you lose sight of the middle part of the visual field. In wet AMD gives rise to lack of oxygen formation of new blood vessels, which unfortunately is not as durable as regular tub. The new tub will be

We do not know the exact cause of AMD, but we know that advanced age, heredity and smoking increases the risk. Some studies suggest that foods such as eggs, spinach and broccoli reduces the risk because they contain a protective pigment, xanthophylls. Free radicals (highly reactive substances and tissue destruction) has been suspected to cause AMD.

Symptoms of AMD

The main symptom is loss of vision in the middle of the field of vision. This proves that trouble to read, recognize faces and watch television. You may experience a change of colors, you look at, or reduced ability to see colors. In wet AMD symptoms occur suddenly, whereas dry AMD is more insidious. Wet AMD causes as the main symptom that you see straight lines (eg. A deck sill or a lygtepæl) curved. In addition, there may come a gray speck in the middle of the field of vision.

It is important to be seen by an ophthalmologist, if you have symptoms of AMD. More than half of the cases of wet AMD can now slowed down, but the disease develops rapidly. The sooner there are wet AMD, the greater the chances of preventing further development of sight to follow. Treatment must be started a few weeks after the first symptoms of wet AMD to have an effect. Dry AMD can unfortunately not yet addressed. If you have previously been found and AMD have been told that you can not

Some studies have shown that if you have incipient AMD may nutritional supplements with zinc, copper and antioxidants reduce the risk of AMD. Vitamin A, E and C are good antioxidants. The mechanism here is probably to prevent the aforementioned free radicals in destroying the blood supply to the retina.

By looking into the background eye (retina) through a special camera to see the changes that are typical of, respectively. wet and dry AMD. In a fluorescence angiography syringes, a fluorescent substance into a vein, for example. in the arm, and then take a picture of the eye retina. Here, you can then see if the dye spill out through the leaking blood vessel (wet AMD) or not (dry AMD).

Treatment of AMD

Dry AMD can not be treated, but many can be helped with low-vision optics, which will get everyday to work better and give that person any of the lost functions back. Aids as luppe, lamps with magnifying glass, audiobooks and the like can also be good support.

Wet AMD can now be treated with a relatively new method calledphoto dynamic therapy. Here sprayed a tracer into a vein, and it continued thereafter with karbanen to eye destroyed, leaking blood vessel. Then lights Monday at the eye with a laser and light activates the administered tracer. The active ingredient close the leaking blood vessel and preventing the more liquid seep into the retina. For more information about photo dynamic therapy see here.

Select and complications

AMD is referred to a serious illness, and for dry AMD will be around 70% of the infected eyes have a significant vision impairment after five years. The disease is also psychologically onerous, since a large number of daily functions such as cooking, reading, etc. are lost. It is also important that families are aware of the disease, and that the affected get the necessary assistance to cope at home.

Previously, the wet form of AMD, which frequently resulted in blindness. Photo Dynamic Therapy can now slow down the disease in more than 60% and thus prevent blindness and provide a much better life than before.
