Symptoms of Wilms' tumor

Often found the tumor at random by a medical examination in the form of filling in the abdomen or flank, which should not be there. Many children have no symptoms. This is true even in large tumors. Other children have abdominal pain or blood in the urine (hematuria).

Precautions and diagnosis

If your child gets blood in the urine, filling in the stomach, which has not been there before, or abdominal pain, you should consult a doctor to get the child examined. The doctor will often find a filling in the abdomen or flank. Blood in the urine that can not be seen with the naked eye, can be detected using a microscope or urinstiks.

In children older than 6 months made the final diagnosis by CT or MRI of the abdomen, including kidneys. In children under six years, it may be necessary to remove tissue from the tumor using a needle. The reason for this is that the scans can be difficult to distinguish between Wilms' tumor and a less dangerous cancer called nefroblastomatose. Woven examined microscopically, the diagnosis can be made.

Treatment of Wilms' tumor

After diagnosis, the first part of the treatment of chemotherapy in 4 to 6 weeks. This reduces tumorens size and reduces the risk of spread of the tumor during the post-opration. Subject to be discussed further after the operation depends on whether, and if so, how much the tumor has spread to the surrounding tissue and other parts of the body.

Select and complications

The tumor can spread to other parts of the body especially the surrounding tissue, lymph nodes and lungs. The more indvækst in surroundings and spread to other parts of the body, the more severe the disease.

The disease is serious, but the prognosis is not so bad. The average survival without the tumor returns are 70-95%. Even with spread to the lungs is the survival of 70%.
